Later it was determined these condors suffered from organophosphate poisoning after they were exposed to insecticides used for agriculture. The species is being re-introduced in Colombia and Ecuador where the condors are either locally extinct or persist in very low numbers. Another sick condor and two dead ones were found nearby.

The birds usually remote habitat makes it difficult to gain a full picture of range and population status, but it appears to have suffered a drastic decline in its former breeding areas as grassland is overtaken by agriculture. An article in Birding Asia from 2010 put forward that the bunting could be the next east Asia species to go extinct.

Hyacinth Macaw © Roger Leguen / WWF-Canon Hyacinth Macaws feed mainly on the kernels of the fruits of two species of palm tree: the Acuri or Urucuri Palm ( Attalea phalerata ) and the Bocaiuva or Macaw Palm ( Acrocomia aculeata ). Such cavities are hard to find and are sometimes disputed by more than one species.

Why and how do people campaign on behalf of a species that is not their own? The norm of moderate concern for animals - that animals matter albeit less than humans - permits the (ab)use of animals in vivisection, factory farming, bloodsports and other contexts where animals suffer. Sounds interesting.

The meat industry is inherently destructive and inhumane, there is no way to make it otherwise, and much of the harm it does to ecosystems is by inflicting suffering and death on billions of nonhuman animals, farmed and free-living, each year. Many of the LGUs have replied, some of them many times.

If you like animals you will generally not want them to suffer and you won’t want them to go extinct. Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans. Wildlife conservation is concerned with protecting wildlife at the level of species or perhaps population. It’s only natural.
