In my lifetime, prairie chickens have declined from stable populations which co-existed with agricultural practices of the day to a species marginalized and exterminated from even those areas. Today in Illinois, 68 males survive.

As a result, the Aruba Birdlife Conservation Foundation began a campaign to make the Burrowing Owl the country’s national bird , which was officially named in 2012. These owls use the tunnels of other species as their nesting burrows, and so can be found associated with ground squirrels, tortoises, and prairie dogs.

While albatrosses are found year-round on the tours out of Kaikoura, the best season for them is winter and not all species are common year round. An article in Birding Asia from 2010 put forward that the bunting could be the next east Asia species to go extinct. There is a campaign, set up by Birdlife International and backed by Sir David Attenborough, which accepts donations to fund conservation work aimed at preserving the bunting.
