The coastal subspecies of California Gnatcatcher ( Polioptila californica californica ) can be found in sage scrub that was once abundant from Ventura County to northern Baja California. As a result, the bird has a long history with the Endangered Species Act. FWS released a 5-year review of the species in 2010.

The rights view is not opposed to efforts to save endangered species. If people are encouraged to believe that the harm done to animals matters morally only when these animals belong to endangered species, then these same people will be encouraged to regard the harm done to other animals as morally acceptable.

I wondered, last August, how animals endure it — the tiny ever-pumping lungs of hummingbirds, the lungs of bighorn sheep shouldering their way up mountains, they must get filled with smoke too, right? They receive no protection, and are often destroyed by salvage logging as quickly as possible.

The Cuban Sandhill Crane , Grus canadensis nesiotes and the Mississippi Sandhill Crane , Grus canadensis pulla are listed as endangered species. “You don’t want them to go extinct, so we want to protect them. Sandhill Cranes fly south for the winter and in their wintering areas they form flocks of over 10,000 birds.

A week ago today, the federal government proposed a “threatened” listing for the Greater Sage Grouse in Nevada and California , as part of a larger study considering whether the species as a whole should be listed. As such, I am delighted to see them receive protection. Naturally, not everyone is equally delighted.

That’s right, the overwhelming benefits to the environment and the economy are generated by non-consumptive uses of the refuges like wildlife photography, environmental education, wildlife observation and interpretation, not hunting and fishing. The refuge was established in 1958 to protect and enhance habitat for migratory birds.

In particular the South Island destination of Kaikoura is world-renowned for the flocks of albatrosses and giant petrels floating right off the pelagic boat, and the ease of the trip makes it a must-visit for any visiting birder. As we left the long harbour there were plenty of inshore seabirds such as gannets, shags, gulls and terns.
