I do not have a life list for those birds I saw in my youth, 45 years ago, in California. But the Kentish Plover was sheltering its young under its body, and the Little Ringed Plover was incubating an egg — right in the middle of downtown Madrid! Iberian Green Woodpecker, Madrid, Spain. But they were still Mandarin Ducks!

Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Bluebirds Fly

Living in California, I am of course speaking of the Western Bluebird ( Sialia mexicana ). They nest in cavities, created by woodpeckers, in large trees and snags. Northern California sees Western Bluebird nest building activities beginning as early as March.

The Cascade Range, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, extends from Northern California to Southern British Columbia. Undoubtedly one of the most interesting aspects of Burney Falls for birders is that it is one of the few locations in California where nesting Black Swifts ( Cypseloides niger ) can be found.
