Wilson’s Plovers are in Breeding Plumage. More Birds are Singing. Spring in Costa Rica is more of a transfer from dry to wet than from cold to hot.

According to the data the authors gathered from banded and recovered Blue Jays , the species shows both a northward post-breeding dispersal (which we’re probably seeing right now, in September) and a southward migration. That last bit is my own interpretation of the data.)

We let a one-eyed Bald Eagle go after a year of battling state officials in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky. Their population is in serious decline, so their breeding colonies are monitored by biologists. Finally my colleague Doty worked her magic in Michigan, and we let him go there.

Here’s hoping that they find the food they need and survive the winter to return north to breed. Here in New York State Snowy Owls have been reported in more than ten counties, with most of those counties having birds being seen in multiple locations.

On our first morning after breakfast, my group and the teens piled onto a boat and headed out to Eastern Egg Rock, once again the breeding ground for Atlantic Puffins (as well as a host of other seabirds) thanks to biologist Dr. Stephen Kress. A Magnificent Frigatebird’s feathers weigh more than its skeleton.
