But once out in the open spaces of Miyun Reservoir, it occupied my every thought. Backtrack a couple of days and I was heading out to Beijing.

Apparently, when breeding, the two parents divide incubation duties, with one bird taking over the daytime duties and another one the nighttime. They frequently reuse nest holes, thus saving vital natural resources even though cleaning out the used nest hole takes about one week ( source ). At between 4 pm and 6 pm, to be exact.

I know he's a conservationist, therefore I know he will advocate for "managing" the "resources" that are sentient nonhumans. And managing means killing them, breeding them, and otherwise fiddling with their populations. That depends largely on us, our priorities, and our allocation of resources.

Both Plumbeous Kite and Fork-tailed Flycatcher are present for the southern winter, the former breeds here, the latter tends to bring their young with them. Even human-discarded foodstuff has been utilized by these resourceful birds! The presence of austral migrants makes T&T an attractive birding destination all year round.

Engber mentions that in 1972, the USDA put into place "a special exemption for rats, mice, and birds, allowing scientists to treat them however they saw fit—in cages of any size, in experiments with any degree of pain and suffering. That exemption remains in force, despite Schwindaman's later attempts to overturn it.
