I thought you would like to know that there are some birds here on the Australian mainland that actually have protection. In October and November 2009 we spent time in Portland, Victoria with Grant’s work and it enabled us to see some new birds and animals along a very picturesque coast.

Fall Birding at Nisqually NWR

Most of the estuaries of Puget Sound in Washington State have been developed, but one of the few that remain is the Nisqually River Delta, which was protected as a National Wildlife Refuge in 1974. Nisqually NWR is a major staging area for migratory birds , a wintering area for many ducks and geese, and a breeding area for numerous songbirds.

Summer Birding at Conboy Lake NWR

I recently drove from my home in Portland to Conboy Lake NWR in southern Washington for a birding day-trip. Adams, the refuge is one of the few breeding locations for Sandhill Cranes in Washington. The refuge now supports most of the nesting Sandhills in Washington, with around 25 breeding pairs.

There is a small resident population in Polk County, Florida, in the middle of the peninsula, mostly on protected land, and once in a while they show up in a place where they can be easily observed.
