To successfully hunt and breed they need clean and clear lakes, and so are sensitive to pollution that affects both them and/or their fishy prey. Unintentional fishing litter can also hurt the birds. Once a fish is hooked, the loon snatches the snared fish right off the line – much to the chagrin of the fishermen and women!

Willie Creek

The first creek to the north is Willie Creek and we often visit it on the south side when we monitor the breeding pairs of Pied Oystercatchers. Beach Stone-curlews Although the majority of shorebirds have ventured north to breed in the northern hemisphere we do still have birds here. There were some rather nice specimens.

Thank a lemming

They breed up here, and spend their winters (usually) in the lower reaches of the Arctic and near polynyas (year round ice free waters) such as the North Water Polynya between Ellesmere Island and Groenland. Lemmings can have four or five litters a year of as many eight young. So this was a good summer for lemmings, a very good year.

We hope this is the right decision – only time will tell! Predators that rely on lemmings, like the Snowy Owl , took advantage of the bounty and had great breeding success, raising large broods which, after the lemming population crashes, dispersed far and wide. Last summer saw lemmings at a high point in their population cycles.

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. We also had Eastern Whipbirds hopping along the edge of the road tossing the leaf litter about in search of food.

Sometimes it was just a matter of looking harder — walking a little further into the woods to get my first glimpse of a Blackburnian Warbler or being in just the right place at the right time to spot an elusive Yellow-billed Cuckoo. The husks of box elder seeds littered the ground, neatly stripped and devoured.

The answer was right in front of me, a bit to the right, an adult keeping an eye on oblivious tourists, the nest deep within the tree. (2) Greater Adjutants are huge birds that were once widespread across much of Southeast Asia; today there are two small breeding populations in India and Cambodia. 2) Plum-headed Parakeet.
