Striated Heron in breeding plumage – extra plumes and blue lores. Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Both are direct results of the pet trade. Farmers keep their livestock in this wetland also.

When I read the description of the Mulga Parrot on a pet website, I first thought it was an advertisement for Thai mail-order brides: “The exotic appearance of the Mulga Parrot might be what attracts you first, but it’s their personality that will win you over” ( source ). Like the figbird, it mostly feeds on fruit.

” The website www.jwcpheasants.com seems to endorse polygamy for this species despite this being illegal in the USA for other animals such as humans. Unlike me, the HBW does not seem to appreciate the species much, stating that it is “hopping about in very ungainly manner.”

Another paper reviews information on Oriental Pied Hornbills raiding the nests of various bird species in Singapore and even pet bird cages. One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. Other threats arise from illegal logging, hunting for bushmeat, and other body parts (feathers, beak, etc.)

Hopefully, the winter time in Shanghai gives the Black-faced Buntings some time to relax from the challenges of the breeding season. One Japanese study found that it arrives at its breeding grounds earlier than in the past, most likely due to increased spring temperatures. No wonder no species are named after me.

If you live in Australia, do not even think of getting this bird as a pet, as “99.99% of these Galahs sold in Australian markets are trapped from the wild” (source). It is almost certainly a rumor that writing a post about Australia and not mentioning dingos is illegal, but why take the risk?
