As a breed, pit bulls have a bad rap. Like every dog they are vulnerable to homelessness and mistreatment. However, they are more vulnerable to being forced into fighting than other breeds. Aside from the breed’s abuses, one finds that adopting out this breed is highly difficult.

The fact that there are dirt-bike trails, a homeless encampment, and dog-walkers makes it seem unlikely that anyone cares that a couple of birders entered the property but one can’t be too careful (says the guy blogging about the visit).

These dogs are homeless through no fault of their own, and by rescuing one of them, you may just save their life. Similarly, choose a breed that doesn’t need much brushing and grooming. If you don’t like to walk, don’t choose a herding breed. Instead, choose a breed that loves to cuddle up with you, and you’ll both be happy.

Often someone buys an expensive purebred animal and then attempts to breed that animal to recoup their money. Choosing a mixed breed animal can help avoid many of the genetic health problems that have developed in purebred animal due over breeding and inbreeding. In fact, nearly a quarter of all animals in shelters are purebred.

There are conservation efforts to save these species by individual aquarists, who are keeping and breeding them in hopes that they can someday be reintroduced into the lake. For me, part if this goes to the question of whether or not we should breed or otherwise try to restore endangered species, in general.
