Revenge Birding (Shanghai, early June 2022)

An Ashy Drongo apparently spends approximately 71% of its time scanning (what non-scientists would probably call looking around), 9% eating (less than a typical Chinese human but much more than me), calling 7%, flying 7%, and 6% preening. The Brown Crake is not that easy to see in Shanghai even though it is breeding here.

Nyala, Southern Africa’s Stunning Antelope

By this I mean applying the term antelope to cover all of the family Bovidae, which would include the sheep, goats and ox. In some ways the the flowering of the antelopes as an evolutionary group mirrors our own story, as they benefited and spread widely as the world’s forests gave way to savannah and plains, just like humans.

Questionable Practices at the Calgary Zoo

Incidents include a hippo who died in transport from Denver and a Turkmenian markhor, a species of wild goat, hung itself at the zoo after becoming trapped by a rope. They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds. In April 2009, unseasonably cold weather froze two whopping crane eggs.
