Miami, Florida has a reputation among the birding community for being overrun with exotic bird species. One of the more unusual additions to our local avifauna is the Common Hill Myna (not to be confused with Common Myna, a parking lot obligate in Miami), a popular bird in the pet trade due to its ability to mimic human speech.

The invasive Burmese Python ( Python molurus ) is well established in the Florida Everglade. Another species of Python, the African Python ( Python sebae ) has established a small population in the 2,877-acre Bird Drive Area (BDA) in South Florida. Pythons have become skittish and take to the water upon noticing the presence of humans.

Another paper reviews information on Oriental Pied Hornbills raiding the nests of various bird species in Singapore and even pet bird cages. One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. Now pairs of hornbills feed outside this correspondent’s window”.

Though they weight less than two ounces, Least Terns migrate from South America to the West, East, and Gulf Coast to breed on dunes or flat gravel roofs (there are also populations in the middle of the United States). In Florida, the Least Tern is a state-designated threatened species; the interior populations are federally endangered.

Dozens of other introduced bird species, largely escapees from pet owners, now call Miami home. Some uncountable species, like Mitred Parakeets , are in fact way more numerous than some of the countable species and they are clearly breeding in well-established populations. The population is not directly dependent on human support.
