Could have done better? Confessions of a year-lister.

In my younger days I always kept year lists: my best ever year was 1986, when I topped the 1,000 mark thanks to trips to Australia, Kenya and various European destinations. These birds (usually juveniles) are clearly linked to the growing breeding population in the region. These are Dunlins.

Birding the Kruger Park (3): Malelane area

The Lilac-breasted Roller is the national bird of Kenya, but of course, this does not help it pay its bills in South Africa. Due to some misallocation of bird species, I saw the Bateleur Eagle near Malelane, not near Bateleur Camp, where a more professional marketing team would have located the bird. Thanks for pointing that out.

Tanzania – Africa at its best

This 12,000 square mile ecosystem stretches across north-western Tanzania into the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Raptors, both diurnal and nocturnal, abound in this park, from massive Verreaux’s Eagle-Owls roosting in leafy trees along the river to African Hawk-Eagles and Lizard Buzzards in the woodlands.
