What the rings reveal

I’d love to have known where and when the Great Spotted Woodpecker in my photograph below was ringed, but though the ring is clearly visible, the number stamped on it isn’t. Black-tailed godwits winter in large numbers on the estuaries of both Norfolk and Suffolk, and we know that nearly all these birds breed in Iceland.

And, sometimes, I use chip notes to try to lure a bird in, using just a couple of notes and only if I was sure it would not be interfering with a breeding bird or other birder’s enjoyment. Five results came back: Northern Cardinal , Red Crossbill , Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Scarlet Tanager , and Red-headed Woodpecker.

Greece: Pelicans galore at Lake Kerkini

There are a few spots where entering the heronry is allowed and the birds breeding in that section seem to be habituated to the visits. Off we sail to another breeding colony – that of threatened Dalmatian Pelicans. I haven’t said that we are inside a national park and these visits are strictly regulated.
