What to Do at High Island When the Winds are South

On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. I love American Avocets and I rarely see them in such marvelous breeding plumage, so I was in heaven. These were winter birds, due to fly north any day. Clapper Rail. Back to the Flats.

Sure, it was a lifer and an unexpected one because most of the hawks have moved further north to breed by late April but Carlos did nothing to ensure that it stuck around for better looks. I easily spotted the Whooping Cranes in the cattle field. It has always been a difficult bird to find, even when abundant.
