The reserve, in the eastern corner of Botswana near Zimbabwe and South Africa, isn’t open to the public in general, so I figured I’d share a few images here by way of showing off. I had the amazing opportunity to visit one last year as the guest of a friend of mine who is a shareholder (not what you know but who!).

I used to live in Botswana, where there are about 450 bird species in an area a few dozen miles from the capital; then somewhat naively moved back to Serbia with mere 250 species around the capital. South Africa (755 / 842). Botswana (529 / 577). And, sadly, haven’t even reached one thousand birds on my life list, yet.

Found patchily in sub-Saharan Africa, this large, ginger-colored owl can never be guaranteed on a trip to the continent. It is classified as threatened in South Africa – where its numbers have dwindled due to loss of habitat and pollution – and is uncommon and localized elsewhere. What a beauty! What a place.

For this reason, places like the Okavango Delta in Botswana and the pan systems of northern-eastern South Africa are good places to find these delightful ducks. Most favored are shallow waterbodies that contain both plenty of water-lillies and surrounding reed-beds.

This species is a southern African endemic, restricted to, but fortunately not uncommon, in dry woodland and sand forest habitats of northern Zululand, Swaziland, scattered pockets of north-eastern South Africa and southern Mozambique. Once their soft trilling call is learnt, they are easily detected.

The UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting in Geneva voted in favour of China becoming a licensed importer.

Marabous occur throughout tropical and subtropical Africa from Zululand in northern South Africa right up to the arid Sahel region fringing the Sahara Desert, avoiding the closed canopy rainforest zones of central and west Africa. They are also attracted by fires and can gather in thousands.

When I got to South Africa though I was struck with some indecision. In particular the GPS function didn’t seem to work in Botswana and Zimbabwe (I am, I have to confess, guessing there was a GPS function as it seemed to work in South Africa in areas with no signal. There had also been a number of splits.

They discovered Gurney’s Sugarbird during their time in South Africa. I live in a city called Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu-Natal province.

Take an example, Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa. I was in Africa earlier this year and the universal message I got was that bookings were down down DOWN because of ebola. If tourists are too dim to tell Sierra Leone from Botswana or Tanzania, do we really want to rely on them to save Africa’s species?

South Africa: The Gotcha Award. Botswana: I Still Have No Idea Award. I failed to see a Southern Black Bustard on my last visit to West Coast National Park near Cape Town. So what did I do? I hired a guide to find one for me and I saw it. I never left the airport on my 13 hour layover and never saw a bird. I still have no idea.
