Ten Birds That Changed the World — a review

10,000 Birds

The book is a grab-bag of facts about the ten birds, mostly culled from other works. They were barely mentioned in The Voyage of the Beagle and not at all in On the Origin of Species. Chapter 10 of Moss’s book, which purports to deal with this symbolism, is decidedly weird. Basic Books, New York, $30 U.S., CAN $38.00.

What’s in a Name?

10,000 Birds

I have a fascinating little reference book called Whose Bird? Wagner wasn’t the only one to have died from gunshot wounds. We can’t change history, while many of these chaps (there’s not many women) were outstanding field ornithologists, though it has to be admitted that almost all of them shot the birds that took their names.

Evolution of the Multi-Media Bird

That for the latter nature went on without them, letting them observe, seems to be proved by the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a big difference in your chance of getting wounded by a small to medium forest mammal if you are hunting them or if you are gathering plant products. They are for the car or the porch. Call the birds in!

When two halves do not make a whole

10,000 Birds

We birders don’t always like to ruminate on missed birds, for some of us the wounds are worn too close to the surface. For starters, Costa’s is a desert species and we were primarily up in the mountains. Joining us for the day was Sheri Williamson, who literally wrote the book on hummingbirds in North America.

German Birding Blitz

10,000 Birds

Europe… with such low herp diversity the locals split any sub-population of a species that occurs on either the Iberian Peninsula or Italy as a new species just to make them feel better out themselves, naturally is the continent that rose to the top of my trip list. Either that or having family friends in Germany. A quick sidetrack.

Sea Snakes of Northern Australia

10,000 Birds

The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. The dog tracks did not lead to any birds, but the wounded snake had a Brahminy Kite on it until I came along on my bike and took a photo. I hope you enjoy these photos!

I Get Back

10,000 Birds

My first experience birding was as a teenager back in the 70s, when birding meant a pair of binoculars, a couple of bird feeders, and a smallish field guide (book). I start visiting a nearby canyon to see what other species might be around. And it continued to produce, being where I first saw a long list of special species.
