It was a pleasure to make these observations at the same time I was reading The Bird Way: A New Look at How Birds Talk, Work, Play, Parent, and Think , Jennifer Ackerman’s new book about the diversity and complexity of bird behavior. I do have some minor criticisms, and these are what you may call procedural.

she’s playful when i place her on the couch, but whenever i place her anywhere on the floor she books it to her cage and stays there. I’ve tried everything i could find on the internet. for example - I laid an old blanket infront of her cage but she started to tear it apart and pee and poo on it.

Out in the open the male Red Junglefowl is an obvious bird that even small children recognise as a “chicken” The Red Junglefowl looks like the “chicken” from story books! Often we would see children run towards Red Junglefowl with excitement due to their familiarity of the bird from story books.

The book I am writing is the New York edition in the new series of American Birding Association field guides. My desk is littered with general field guides, guides to specific families, books about bird behavior, and books about status and distribution of birds in New York while my browser is always opened to eBird and xeno-canto.
