I put it in a small box for several hours, where it appeared to recover, but studies have shown that internal injuries from a strike usually kill the bird. The photographs are actually in color in my Kindle edition but reproduced in black-and-white on the book’s Amazon page. ©2012 Donna L.

And the book is about much more, ripple effects from what happens when part of a living thing becomes the central ingredient to a highly visual, social, profitable business. I did often wonder while reading the book whether the result equaled the effort. The late Victorian age was not a good time to be an egret!

Call me old fashioned if you like, but I rather like many of these old names, as they put a bit of colour and interest into birding, especially if you bother to investigate who exactly the birds are named after. I have a fascinating little reference book called Whose Bird? It’s full of fascinating facts.

There has been a lot written about Kirtland’s Warbler, it is one of the most studied birds in the world, but, as far as I know this is the first book that tells its many-faceted story as an adventure tale that can be enjoyed by all of us. And, this is a good book that I think 10,000 Birds readers will enjoy. photo by Lynn C.

Well, as it turns out neither a trip to a slaughterhouse nor killing an animal yourself is powerful enough to make people go vegan.

If the animal then touches or investigates the mark, it is taken as an indication that the animal perceives the reflected image as an image of itself, rather than of another animal. In the classic test, an animal is anesthetized and then marked on an area of the body the animal cannot normally see.
