It took me a while to wrap my mind around the concept of Birds and People , Mark Cocker and David Tipling’s book that, in 592 pages, explores the intersection of just that—birds and us. Still, I found it a little disjointing that a book has been written about our relationship with birds. So, I just sit here, amazed at this book.

Grief, friendship, gratitude, wonder, and other things we animals experience. Dogs are able to detect diseases such as cancer and diabetes and warn humans of impending heart attacks and strokes. Many animals also display wide-ranging emotions, including joy, happiness, empathy, compassion, grief, and even resentment and embarrassment.

I knew he was also a former Marvel comic book writer and editor, but did not know that he also, unsurprisingly, had a history of involvement in LGBTQ and Black rights advocacy. It is a skillfully, beautifully written book about finding joy and spirituality in nature and birds. It’s a book we all should read.

There are countless CDs and downloads and books, but MyYogaOnline is not only convenient (as in, you don't have to leave the house), but it is also very inexpensive to join (and you can view sample videos free of charge), and the videos are beautifully produced. I sometimes experience despair thinking about all of the suffering.

So modest and retiring is this well named woodland recluse that it will not sing if it suspects humans are taking notice of it. Perhaps it feels some measure of security from human intervention in subdued light. To hear the song at its best, one must be there at twilight, which eliminates most people. Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, Emotional Exhaustion these are all familiar topics to those of us who spend our time helping animals. They shared with me that they have the ability to sense our emotions and feelings. They will have the opportunity find a forever home, experience unconditional love or transition to the Other Side.

The NYC owls have little to do with the book in front of me except that it too is about birds and people. The 26 essays in When Birds Are Near are all about the real-life and emotional spaces where people overlap with birds. Yes, there are scores of photos on Twitter accompanied by the expected exclamation points and emojis.
