And the book is about much more, ripple effects from what happens when part of a living thing becomes the central ingredient to a highly visual, social, profitable business. I did often wonder while reading the book whether the result equaled the effort. The late Victorian age was not a good time to be an egret!

Steve, another member of our birding group, also had a field guide by Kenefick, Restall, and Hayes, but his was bordered in GREEN, had a slightly different title, and, to my extreme chagrin, was much more recent, showing the recently split Trinidad Motmot instead of the Blue-crowned Motmot on my book’s cover. I was confused.

When I was a kid I loved books like My Side of the Mountain , Island of the Blue Dolphins , and Julie of the Wolves. Falcon Wild is a new book in that long tradition, and this one features a more realistic (though still very slightly romanticized) portrait of a human/animal partnership.

In humans, the sound of the letter F is made by placing your lower lip against the bottom of your top teeth and blowing. Bird books are rampant with this stuff. We deserve a better brand of bird songs. I’m not sure how these mnemonics became such common knowledge (maybe RTP?), Willow Flycatcher, not singing fitz-bew.
