Returning home, reunions, smoke and birds!

During the weekend that I was there, it was announced that there were over 1300 fires burning just within the state of Oregon, not to mention California, Washington, Montana and British Columbia, Canada. It was to latter area that I was traveling. The smoke that had settled everywhere within the state was incredible.

Finally, I want to leave you with a thought from the astonishing Barry Lopez, who gave a Q & A here at the University of Montana yesterday: “So much of memory is tied to being in love with the world.” Perhaps I should hike Mt. I’m planning a trip and seeking advice.

Eurasian Tree Sparrows from long ago

Since it’s really hard to type in a splint, here is a blast from the past: specifically from the beginning of this long, strange trip, my cross-country journey from New York to Montana: I have to confess, I had forgotten all about the Eurasian Tree Sparrow. Even as non-threatening a person as yours truly has been ordered off of lawns.

Last week was spring break at the University of Montana, and so, for me, a chance for a brief flying visit back east. Fish and Wildlife Service. Yesterday, there were none. Today, Tree Swallows are here, flashing light and dark above the river. Now, let’s back up. Those pesky metaphors cropping up everywhere.

Winter Mission

Ferruginous Hawks breed in the grasslands of eastern Montana, but they are rare in the mountains and in winter, so this bird was certainly a surprise. Images courtesy of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. It sat serenely while we scrambled to set up scopes and get our looks, and only took off as we did so ourselves.

Of Whiskey Jacks and Water Ouzels

Outside of the Cinclus , Ouzel is also a common name sometimes applied to a variety of Turdus thrushes including the Common Blackbird of Europe, so the literal meaning of the name is “Water Thrush&#. photos courtesy of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. But it sounds so much more sophisticated to say Ouzel.
