Despite my manic work schedule of late my positioning in southern New Jersey does lend itself to an occasional, if brief, birding outing when the stars align properly and I am near a birdy spot when I suddenly find myself with a free hour or so. A couple of times I have had this happen near the Edwin B.

A River Runs Through It

The next bird was a White-tailed Eagle mobbed by a Common Buzzard that must have had its nest nearby. European Pond Terrapins resting on a floating log. A few dozen Little Egrets were foraging in a wet meadow, perhaps a new heronry somewhere close?

On the opposite bank, European pond terrapins are basking in the sun and, behind them, a herd of horses is grazing, preventing the scrub from taking over the grasslands. And indeed, a slender grey bird with black tail and head, red eyes and legs, comes to within a few meters of us to check us out. Steve answers: Bonelli’s Eagle !

Turtles of Brigantine

Finally, the turtle species that I saw more than any other, the one that is in the “Turtle Crossing&# picture above, the Northern Diamondback Terrapin Malaclemys terrapin terrapin. They are known for living in saltmarshes and other brackish habitat and are highly variable in appearance, in addition to being dimorphic.

Now nearing 50 and duly lost in a mid-life crisis, Dragan Simic took to birding rather late – only half a lifetime ago, after successfully testing his inadequate skills in other life threatening activities, such as rock climbing and vertical caving.
