After spending the weekend along the South Carolina coast, I can say with confidence that I saw dozens and dozens of South Carolina’s state bird: both the original and the current version. Carolina Wrens are directly influenced by climate change. Do I think they made the right decision?

If you live in the eastern United States, chances are you’re familiar with the clear, loud, teakettle teakettle teakettle song that reverberates through woods and thickets. This unique sound belongs to the Carolina Wren , who unsurprisingly is the state bird of South Carolina!

As devoted readers of 10,000 Birds know , the writers contribute checklists to a joint eBird account called the “ 10,000 Birds Collaborative.”. For the United States, there is also a state list. The Collaborative has also added six states. Thus, there are now seven states with 200+ observed species.

For many birders a highlight of birding the southeastern United States, maybe even the definitive birding experience of the region, is taking in the great numbers and diversity of long-legged wading birds. All in South Carolina. Who knew?). Below is a family shot of at least six.

The sand exposed during low tide makes for excellent walking, and even better birding. Sure, I can see most of the birds in the Bahamas while living within Florida, but not in such stunning surroundings! I had only seen that distinctive feature once before, on the much darker sands of Folly Beach in South Carolina.

I realize that listing is a reviled in birding culture as it is celebrated, and more listing even more so, but hear me out here. I mean to make the argument that county listing is birding at its most pure, the ultimate combination of the two warring angels that sit upon each one of our shoulders. A fine bird for the county.

The southeast tip of the Florida peninsula is not well endowed with a wide variety of sparrows in winter like the rest of the southeastern United States. We are just too far south for any of the above mentioned species, but that is not to say that we do not get any sparrows at all.
