I’ve been to the Sounds before, but I had never visited them specifically to bird, which means I hadn’t seen the specialities there. New Zealand Fur-seals are the most common pinniped found in New Zealand. This trip was to rectify that. Spotted Shags are endemic to New Zealand. So what are you waiting for?

Empire Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) are the largest living penguin species, almost four feet tall (taller when they stretch), and the least likely to be seen on birding or nature trips. They are excellent science writers, patiently explaining the physiological processes involved in deep diving in penguins, seals, and human.

Basically, hornbills get paid by evolution to eat fruit, digest the fleshy parts, and regurgitate or defecate the rest – a means of seed transportation that is apparently quite attractive to many plants despite the yuck factor involved. The two birds in question were a female Great Hornbill and a female Rhinoceros Hornbill, both escapees.
