Maybe the latter is because the bird is so plump, or maybe it is because (at least to me) the head looks like it has been created by a somewhat amateurish wood carver. Bonus photos: One to annoy those people who do not like human items in bird photos … … and one showing an embarrassing moment for an eagle, crashing into the ice.

Empire Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) are the largest living penguin species, almost four feet tall (taller when they stretch), and the least likely to be seen on birding or nature trips. They are excellent science writers, patiently explaining the physiological processes involved in deep diving in penguins, seals, and human.

The water we provide in our garden attracts many birds including the Double-barred Finch in the header photo. Our garden is mostly native plants, which attract both birds and insects. Another activity that anybody anywhere in the world can contribute too is becoming a Seal Spotter.

It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. This third obstacle seemed impossible to overcome until I discovered that the Port Townsend Marine Science Center hosts Puffin Cruises aboard the 65′ Glacier Spirit, owned and operated by Puget Sound Express. But then came the biggest obstacle of all… …would Daisy agree to a boat ride that had a bird as its goal?
