Migrant birds make an incredibly perilous journey, twice per year. On the breeding grounds of the north, a small bird flies into the night, takes a bearing for the south, gains altitude and flies onward. During this incredible DIY survival trip, patches of light tempt the small bird to a lethal, unnatural end.

The sky had been blue when we had left Wiluna a few hours earlier and there was no indication of what was likely to happen to the weather later in the day, but we had pulled in at a rest area about 55kms/34 miles south of the town to investigate the facilities. There were a few rubbish bins and a shelter with a picnic table and benches.

Birders know that the pairing of farms and birds represents more than mere bucolic romance – it’s a match borne out of a real avian dependence on these man-made landscapes. Note the two birds flying over the wheatfield on the lefthand side. By the early twentieth century, however, saison was sliding into obscurity.

We were very concerned about the state of the reef just off the northern end of Cable Beach and due to the fact that there was a suitable low tide this week we could investigate if this issue also presented itself there. Sooty Oystercatchers -first year birds have a black tipped bill. Pied Oystercatchers.

The birds will be dispersing across the country and our garden has been rather quiet since the rain started. A wet garden without birds! We have been aware of large flocks of the smaller species using Cable Beach during the day and night on very high tides to roost for some years and decided to risk the weather and investigate.

Turdus “Blacky&# Merula sat near the trunk of the small evergreen in the backyard that was his territory’s centre, hunkered down and head tucked in to shelter from the rain. It sheltered him, it haunted him, and it set his thoughts adrift, to the warmth of spring and the family he had. The darkness was all around him.
