As the story goes, way back in the late 19th Century and organization called the American Acclimitazation Society was working hard to introduce every one of the 600 species of birds mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays to North America. The default starling of urban areas in this corner of India are these remarkable rosys.

On a recent visit to Tokyo, Japan, I came across a beautiful bird that I took to be a White’s Thrush , Zoothera dauma. My Japanese field guide, published in 1982, calls my bird White’s Ground Thrush and prefers the Turdus genus. Where there is a description of one of the birds, the author fails to mention which one.

Knowing that there are reserves with long lists of 600 or more species, I set my threshold at more than 600 birds… and found only a few such hotspots. Such places are clearly under-visited, under-birded or eBird isn’t that popular in those parts of the world. Other countries still have to reach the 300 birds threshold.

What was the weirdest place you ever birded? It was the final day of my two weeks long first passage to India. The only person I asked before the trip was one seasoned Canadian traveler who has spent some time in the subcontinent: “Do you have any advice for an absolute beginner in India?” Some smelly sewage ponds? A war zone?

In North American birding, east versus west is the most basic geographic division of the continent. American White Pelicans have been making a bit of a splash in the northeast United States lately, with more and more birds straying into the region over the years. Good birding and happy drinking! In this post, we’ll share the most positive of the positives, at least for those who write for 10,000 Birds who decided to share. Of all the birds that make the list for a given year one of those birds must be the Best Bird of the Year. We are always content bird-watching around Broome anyway!
