I am so happy to be back on 10,000 birds – I have missed Mike and Corey and my fellow Beat Writers! Normally I rant about environmental dangers and describe heartwarming/mind-boggling/headscratching wild bird rescues. These huge guys with long beards and Harley T-shirts were almost in tears when I told them the bird would be OK.

If birders say they love birds ostensibly because they can fly and we cannot, then there must be no more beloved group of birds than the swallows. These aerial acrobats are among the most impressive flyers in the bird world, darting this way and that over open country in pursuit of flying insects. Sailors saw them as good luck.

The little red bit on the crown on this photo indicates that it is a male bird. The Buff-necked Woodpecker (Taman Negara, Malaysia) is classified as Near Threatened, with the usual rationale of “habitat loss” (which sounds nicer than “evil humans destroying anything that does not immediately bring in money).

Although it was previously believed that cats were also safe, a cat in Iowa has now tested positive for the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. The ASPCA recommends taking “steps to limit possible transmission from humans to pigs and vice versa.&# Ferrets and birds are susceptible. Cats should be monitored.

Outside of hardcore twitchers looking for specialty birds and after speaking to thousands and thousands of birders, I have concluded that most people really do not put much emphasis on our prairies. I can certainly speak about the Midwest where states like Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, etc. Good birding and love our prairies!
