Once upon a time in Bojcinska Forest

Once upon a time, vast forests of Quercus robur , known as common, pedunculate, European or English oak blanketed the Sava River floodplain, all the way from Croatia down to the river’s confluence in Belgrade, Serbia. The most numerous birds are Common Chaffinches. And that is where Q. and I were heading this morning.

Upside-down January

In the more normal years, I would spend January visiting the very best wildfowling spots along the Danube and seeing the best birds there are, so in February I would be well saturated with birds and feeling: Still winter? I observed White-tailed Eagles likely a few thousand times, and this didn’t strike me as the dark young bird.

Birding the Cyclades: My my, how can I resist you?

We sail into the relative calm of a cliff, the mast takes an upright position, navigation becomes calm and quiet… quiet enough for our bird guide, Andrea Bonetti to pick up a voice of a Western Rock Nuthatch coming from the rock face. Still, in recent decades, the Great Black-backed Gull has become a regular migratory and wintering wanderer of neighbouring Hungary and Croatia. Is it because the number of birds is increasing? Last but not least, there are only two or three conformed sightings of this northern species, rare in Serbia. A bit of history, when I started to bird, almost three decades ago (yes, in the last millennium) Herring Gulls were everywhere, including Serbia. That was an easy life. A large gull? Simple, Herring. A large gull? Large gull?

Birds and football! What a combination!

On June 12th, FIFA’s Football World Cup will kick off in Brazil, with the home side hosting Croatia for the opening match in Sao Paulo. Open from dawn to dusk 7 days a week, it has an eBird hotspot list of 79 species from 16 submissions. It has an eBird score of 197 species from 25 checklists. Timings are 08.00 ‘til 17.00.
