We want to help the birding tourism industry come back strong from the COVID pandemic. Birding Experiences is a Costa Rican company owned and run by enthusiastic birdwatchers from Costa Rica.

Mountains are a boon for birding. The montane forests of Costa Rica and western Panama are home to at least 50 species of birds that live nowhere else except for one or two that also occur in northwestern Colombia. Bird the high elevation habitats of the Talamancan Mountain Range and the regional endemics rule.

After a brief look at a map, my rough guesstimate is that the territory from Guatemala and Belize south to the Darien gap is roughly equal to New England, or Florida and the eastern parts of Georgia and the Carolinas north to the Virginia line. The Rufous-collared Robin is one of those birds. It calls like a weird, screaming mini-cat!

Last week, I received an email from an American couple that has recently moved to Morelia; they found me right here on 10,000 Birds. Although birding is not their first reason for moving here, they are enjoying meeting the lovely locals, such as the Broad-billed Hummingbird and Vermilion Flycatchers. Fame suits me, I must humbly admit.)
