The other day I was exploring a new area for the first time, birding the national park that I’ve watched only in BBC documentaries, the place famous for the largest Dalmatian Pelican colony in the world – more than 1300 pairs! Checking the birds on the stork’s nest, I found both House and Spanish Sparrows. Have you heard of it?

Spotting Blackpoll Warblers around here breaks bittersweet; obviously, anyone would enjoy spotting one of these monochromatic songbirds, but with this late migrant comes the promise of months of little more than resident breeders. Though he’s seen some decor birds he hasn’t been actively birding very much. How about you?

It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. It goes like this: While fishing, the bird tucks its head down and uses its wings to create a shady area. Pel’s Fishing Owl, where were you?

Anyone who knows me knows my favorite kind of birding: vacation birding. Enjoy your patches and your resident breeders. I’ll take new birds in new habitat any day. The reason I mention vacation birding is that I’m headed down to Virginia Beach this weekend for sun, sand, and who knows what else.

The Bronx also has a special place in birding history.

It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. And us, the birders who travel here from March to May to worship the birds as they seek to survive.

Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. Further to the east, Asian Openbill displays the same special feature but is mostly a white plumaged bird.
