A Red Fox in Georgia, not looking very red I’ve never been to Svalbard, so I haven’t ticked off polar bear, but I have seen brown bears on a number of occasions in both Romania and Bulgaria. I’ve also sat for hours in unabated hides in Bulgaria where it’s a matter of luck whether you see a bear or not. in the evening.

I still know my audience - this is primarily a blog read by birders in North America, who see the term “squirrel” as little more than a synonym for house sparrow, starling, pest and cholera. Bear in mind, even the plants have to find ways to survive, so virtually every one of them has some form of thorny defense. When it comes to a one stop shopping for food and shelter, no other plant is as widely used as the Cardon Cactus family. Therefore, nothing here ever passes on a chance for a meal.

There’s a Three-striped Palm Squirrel by the side of the track, while Jungle Bush Quails are running across it in front of our Maruti Gypsy, almost the official safari vehicle of India. Trying not to inhale so much of the dust cloud that envelops us, I am sporting a bandana tied bank-robber style. The Telia Lake. Very dusty Swarovski CLs.

Originally they were all placed in the family Capitonidae , but over time taxonomists have determined that actual relationships between these barbets are far more complex. Gray-throated Barbet is one of the plainer members of the African Barbet family. Note the strange nasal tufts at the base of the bill.
