This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

It was also great to finally travel overseas again, meet a lot of people I did not know (and some I did), to be in a new country… and not just the new country, but its best birding area, where almost all local hotspots are yellow (150+ species) and several are ochre (200+ sp.), impressive for Central Europe.

Head for the sea only when you fully recharge your batteries. Other species of interest include the southernmost breeding population of Greylag Goose in Europe, Goosander (at bigger and deeper Megali Prespa), Hazel Grouse (at Mt. Some 312 species were recorded here and my September daily averages were around 70.

The days for me to add to my Little Big Years species count are getting fewer and fewer, and with it, my budget. That, and 10 days back on the way was going to be a great to recharge the batteries after a long round-the-world trip. Little Big Year species count: 834. 172 lists were shared and 1004 species were seen, both records for October, so well done beats! Black Hawk-Eagle – Spizaetus tyrannus. Ankeny NWR–Eagle Marsh. Ornate Hawk-Eagle – Spizaetus ornatus. Martial Eagle – Polemaetus bellicosus. African Hawk-Eagle – Aquila spilogaster.
