Called The Big Bird Race , it tells the story of how my team, representing Country Life magazine , recorded 155 species in 24 hours in East Anglia (Suffolk and Norfolk).

Honestly, How Much Could It Rain?

I had set aside the morning of Sunday, June 10th to cross the San Francisco Peninsula to the Pacific Ocean town of Half Moon Bay, a mere 25 minute drive away, for a few hours of birding. Not only was I very, very wet, so were the birds that I saw. I’m fond of photos of birds in a visible mist or drizzle. I was wrong.

White-winged Dove in Queens!

This morning I was out at Fort Tilden on the barrier beaches of Queens at first light, hoping to take advantage of the northwest winds to see some good birds going past. I decided to head back to my car to warm up before birding the vast expanses of Fort Tilden some more. After all, you never know what might show up in November.

On Post-Hurricane Birding in Queens

Fort Tilden was totally closed and the cop standing guard at the road to Breezy Point looked at me like I was crazy when I asked if there was any chance someone who wanted to watch birds could get to the barrier beaches anywhere west of Fort Tilden. Birds are great but you know what? Yeah, I’m a bit slow sometimes.

Queens County Bird Club 2018 Big Sit Results

I had high hopes for the 5th Annual Queens County Bird Club Big Sit this past Saturday at Fort Tilden. We had persevered through four years at the top of Battery Harris Platform and could bring our experience to bear on the task of trying to record as many species as possible on a single day from that single spot.
