Honestly, How Much Could It Rain?

The Red-winged Blackbirds were wet. I had thought that my camera use on two previous neighborhood outings was not enough to demand recharging its battery. Not only was I very, very wet, so were the birds that I saw. I’m fond of photos of birds in a visible mist or drizzle. But these ones looked almost as bedraggled as I did.

White-winged Dove in Queens!

I got up on the Battery Harris platform and enjoyed large numbers of American Goldfinch going past, as well as flocks of Red-winged Blackbird , Common Grackle , and Pine Siskin. But the winds were strong, the air was cold, and my hands were starting to get numb. After all, you never know what might show up in November.

On Post-Hurricane Birding in Queens

As I drove east through scenes of destruction that I can’t even come up with the words to describe, I was frustrated by the continuous flocks of birds going overhead – most were blackbirds but some, at least, were finches. I have never seen Evening Grosbeaks in Queens.

John Greenleaf Whittier was deeply religious, but at the same time he was remarkably reverent towards the environment. His poems rhapsodize about woods, water, and pastoral settings. He was also enamored of birds.

Queens County Bird Club 2018 Big Sit Results

We had persevered through four years at the top of Battery Harris Platform and could bring our experience to bear on the task of trying to record as many species as possible on a single day from that single spot. I had high hopes for the 5th Annual Queens County Bird Club Big Sit this past Saturday at Fort Tilden. Osprey are awesome.
