Growing up in western New York, February was one of the more tedious of winter months. Ornate Hawk-Eagle. Sometimes, this one forages for insects and bats near street lights adjacent to forest. It might be the shortest month but the continuing cold, snow, and dreary weather made it seem like one of the longest.

Patrick had many birds to choose from for his Best Bird of the Year but he chose a new species for him in Costa Rica, a real regional rarity: My BBOTY for 2014 goes to Hudsonian Godwit. the scene where Jochen’s saw his BBOTY – a Bat Hawk. Redgannet’s BBOTY – a Great Grebe. Yes, it was an exceptionally good year.

There were birders from a wide cross-section of the United States: Colorado, Ohio, Idaho, Iowa, Wyoming, Washington State, Pennsylvania, New York State, New Jersey, California, Texas, Florida. We also got great views of a very small mammal, Wahlberg’s Epauletted Fruit Bat, at Satara. And, there were birds.
