I showed him the pellet and he felt the feathers were definitely Blue Jay feathers, specifically from the crest, but they did not match the beak in the pellet. But the jawbone…that was from a bat! Oehlenschlager apologized that he couldn’t say the exact species of bat. It was either a big brown bat or a hoary bat.

And this one’s was definitely when a bird briefly took wing just to the left of our path, only to settle right back down to the ground. Like all members of the Nightjar family, the Buff-collared Nightjar hunts for insects on the wing, at night, and rests immobile during the day, protected by its subtle camouflage.

Of course, various species of bats as well. At night, we keep our eyes out for the passage of the neighborhood Barn Owl , oftentimes a Tropical Screech-Owl would hunt insects from a low perch on our almond tree. Sometimes this Merlin ‘s mate comes to check him out, but for most of the northern winter he hunts solo.

However, if we accept that some old reports were this species and not the very similar and easily confused Bat Falcon , it’s pretty likely that a few Orange-breasteds did hunt for Band-tailed Pigeons , parakeets, parrots, and other birds over the canopy of rainforests at the base of the Costa Rican mountains.
