The waterfowl flock was made up of two very unique looking species: the Fulvous and Black-belled Whistling Ducks. My husband and I zipped up windbreakers and pulled down hats to stay warm as we traversed the raised path, watching Common Gallinules, White-Faced Ibis, and American Coots probe for food along the exposed mud.

Still, I knew the winds of the hurricane could bring interesting bird species, so I ventured out Saturday morning, a day and a half before the meat of the storm made it up to northern Florida. Despite the rough weather – and rougher still to come – I tallied over 20 species. Waves crash along Navarre Beach Park.

Like my two previous visits I spent one day that I didn’t have to lead any field trips doing a run through central Florida looking for some of the specialty species of the region. On my previous trips I was successful on each and every species except for the crane. ” Was I? Yes, dear fisherman, yes!

Like Syngenta’s “Talon,” “Jaguar”s active ingredient is brodifacoum, which has killed mountain lions, bobcats, and house cats, plus all of the species mentioned above. Perhaps not surprisingly, the poison companies seem to be hiding behind Teflon shields about the problems with their products.

A beautiful series of raised boardwalks have been constructed, allowing year round access to the area, thru the marsh area, all the way out nearly a half mile into the tidal flats. Over 200 species of birds can be found on the refuge, depending on the time of year. Here are a few scenics from my last few days on the refuge.

Pough “with illustrations in color of every species” by Don Eckelberry, Doubleday, 1946. If you remember that the first edition of Sibley was published with “National Audubon Society” on the cover, raise your hand. The press material says it covers over 800 species, so you know I had to do a count.
