Obviously, Bald Eagles are a pretty big deal too. Those bigger birds of prey command respect, but it’s not like falcons are unknown. Even outside of Atlanta , Peregrine Falcons spend their breeding seasons smiling for the ( web ) camera from atop edifices all across the country.

While New Zealand is famous for its endemic oddities, once upon a time New Zealand also had many birds from groups and families that are no longer found here. The mysterious piopio were recently recognized for what they were, New Zealand’s representatives from the oriole family. And eagles. New Zealand had eagles.

This location is great as it is close to Jeanne’s Family, as well as a very short drive to the Billy Frank Jr. Northern Harriers, Peregrine Falcons, American Kestrels, and a fair number of Bald Eagles all can be found on the refuge year round. Despite all this red tape stuff, I am still making some time for birding.

The last weekend of January found me in the frosty Pacific Northwest, meeting some long over due work and family obligations. At one point, standing in the middle of one of the first dikes, I was able to spot 17 Bald Eagles , a Peregrine Falcon , two American Kestrels , and Northern Harrier. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge.

Falcons are now known to be related to parrots; vultures to be cousins of storks. Taxonomic tweakings and reshufflings of birds on the Family and Genus levels are too many to count. We have more California Condors , Bald Eagles , and Peregrine Falcons , but there seem to be less Spotted Owls , Burrowing Owls , Sooty Shearwaters.

The binding also appears to be strong; I’m able to open to Prairie Falcon in Colorado , pressing open the pages so they lie flat, without fear that I will crack the spine. (It’s Species Accounts in both titles are arranged loosely in ABA Checklist order, with some flipping around of order within each family.
