My attention was drawn upward by the elegant flying-knife form of an Osprey bearing a large fish. The Ravens – at least, I presume they were the same pair – swept into view again, this time engaged with a different foe – a juvenile Bald Eagle. This is something to bear in mind when reading fables.

We had already planned on at least one night in Eugene, and spending a day at Fern Ridge Wildlife Area. I did manage to get a few Surf Scoters, my first Bald Eagle of the year, Pelagic Cormorants , and an unlikely pair of Western Grebes out in the middle of that rough water.

Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. To my disappointment the biggest and most visible species I saw was the introduced Common (Ring-necked) Pheasant , and my first lifer was the equally introduced Gray Partridge.
