Couas and koels are both cuckoos, saw-wings are swallows and logrunners are an odd unique thing from Australia who’s only relative is the charmingly named Chowchilla). I’d never heard of them until 2005 when I saw some in the Botanical Gardens of Canberra in Australia. What, exactly, is a pardalote? A Spotted Pardalote !

Meanwhile across the ditch , my useful column last week explaining how awful oxygen thief Tony Abbott could distract Australia from his flailing incompetence has sadly for him arrived too late and he has been disposed in what Australians mysteriously refer to as a spill. Another great birding adventure book is The Jewel Hunter by Chris Gooddie (Princeton Univ. And, he did, trekking to remote areas of Asia, Africa, and Australia, often on his own, always on the lookout for a good beer. I think of The Jewel Hunter often when I travel to foreign countries, wishing I could do it like Goodie did.

Hes only been birding since 2005 but has garnered a respectable life list by birding whenever he wasnt working as a union representative or spending time with his family. Lacking, as I do, a birding reputation that would make people part with cash for my time I’ll have to go for the rarity hunters and put together an itinerary of highlights that can’t be missed. This outstanding member of the wattlebird family is unique among songbirds in having different shaped beaks for each of the sexes.

The trip was to visit a handful of sites across North Sydney, which was great for me as they were places I could stand to know better and were close to where my family live (and I was staying). I must have been very lucky with my timing because I was there when swamp mahoganies were flowering and this brings the nectar hunters in droves.
