This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW). Pat Fish was the creative force behind a band called Jazz Butcher – he died in October last year. Of course, Little Egrets like to eat fish. And it does not even live in reeds. So, I need to find something else to say about this species.

Like the Adjutants in Asia and Jabiru of the Americas, the Marabou is our bare-headed scavenging stork. Ethiopia’s Rift Valley lakes such as Lake Ziway and Awassa are famous for the gangs of Marabous that hang around the fish markets and allow close approach in the hope of a smelly handout. They also prey on frogs and crabs.

A housecat in Buenos Aires got its start in Africa, a sheep in Australia to the Middle East, a chicken in Ireland can trace its origin to the jungles of Asia. There were no mammals, little game, and not many birds either. But man cannot live on bread alone, and the homesick settlers wanted more than just game.

There are a lot of other large Galliforme birds around the world, and before the Spanish were busy conquering the New World, one of these, from Central Asia most likely, was already being imported as a food product and as live birds into Europe. They may have also had hunting dogs with them as well. This is where they got their name.
