This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW). Pat Fish was the creative force behind a band called Jazz Butcher – he died in October last year. Of course, Little Egrets like to eat fish. And it does not even live in reeds. So, I need to find something else to say about this species.

Like the Adjutants in Asia and Jabiru of the Americas, the Marabou is our bare-headed scavenging stork. Ethiopia’s Rift Valley lakes such as Lake Ziway and Awassa are famous for the gangs of Marabous that hang around the fish markets and allow close approach in the hope of a smelly handout. They also prey on frogs and crabs.
