One of the more unusual additions to our local avifauna is the Common Hill Myna (not to be confused with Common Myna, a parking lot obligate in Miami), a popular bird in the pet trade due to its ability to mimic human speech. Common Hill Mynas are easy to locate due to their loud, shrill calls.

The Blue-crowned Laughingthrush (Wuyuan) is listed as Critically Endangered, as there are only about 250-280 birds spending the breeding season in Northeastern Jiangxi (and according to the HBW, it is not clear where they spend the non-breeding period). I once saw this White-throated Laughingthrush at Nanhui, Shanghai.

The Rose-ringed Parakeet naturally occurs in two isolated areas: a thin strip across Africa just south of the Sahara, and south Asia where it is mostly found in India with smaller ranges in adjacent countries. This is what happens when people choose their pet birds on visual factors alone without taking vocalizations into account.

The kitten Venus is an F4 Bengal meaning she’s four generations (F4) removed from the Asian Leopard Cat which is a small wild cat from Asia. Asian Leopards are about house cat sized and can breed with house cats giving a bit more wild animal to your domestic pet.

We have seen them on remote beaches hunting shorebirds and taking their eggs and they have been responsible for much of the egg loss in breeding Pied Oystercatchers along the Broome coast. They are incredibly cunning and not easily trapped. There is a huge risk of disease coming into Australia and the government does not take risks.

Europe has one species (Eurasian Spoonbill), the Americas have one (Roseate Spoonbill), Australia two (Royal and Yellow-billed Spoonbill), and Asia has two as well (Eurasian and Black-faced Spoonbill). The benefit for the wasps is that they get to keep a beautiful pet. Ostriches originated in Asia. Ostrich industry in Egypt.
