Hill Mynas: A Touch of Tropical Asia in Miami

One of the more unusual additions to our local avifauna is the Common Hill Myna (not to be confused with Common Myna, a parking lot obligate in Miami), a popular bird in the pet trade due to its ability to mimic human speech. Common Hill Mynas are easy to locate due to their loud, shrill calls.

Laughing at you, not with you

The Blue-crowned Laughingthrush (Wuyuan) is listed as Critically Endangered, as there are only about 250-280 birds spending the breeding season in Northeastern Jiangxi (and according to the HBW, it is not clear where they spend the non-breeding period). I once saw this White-throated Laughingthrush at Nanhui, Shanghai.

Invasive species in Australia

We have seen them on remote beaches hunting shorebirds and taking their eggs and they have been responsible for much of the egg loss in breeding Pied Oystercatchers along the Broome coast. They are incredibly cunning and not easily trapped. There is a huge risk of disease coming into Australia and the government does not take risks.
