After 3 months of South and Southeast Asia, Indonesia and Australia, Arjan’s count stood at 2,060 species. Brazil was exceptionally favorable to his Big Year, providing him with 554 new species in twenty-two days. I’ve had so many incredible experiences.

The 2000 MacKinnon guide is showing its age while my preferred choice for the Shanghai area, Mark Brazil’s “Birds of East Asia”, covers non-Chinese locations such as Japan and Korea while excluding Western China. It seems to me that the latter is more detailed, simply better.

The Vulturine Storks

Fossils discovered in Brazil are indistinguishable from modern Wood Storks, and date from at least the late Pleistocene. Its the only member of the genus Mycteria in the New World, the rest of its cogeners, a handful of other bald and nearly bald Storks with long curved bills, hail from East Africa and South Asia.
