Natural areas include Pelham Bay Park, Van Cortlandt Park, Woodlawn Cemetery, New York Botanical Garden, and the Bronx Zoo. The “Literature Cited” section lists the traditional print articles, books, and maps, but doesn’t include items like data sets or rare bird alerts. It’s a very mixed chapter.

Some were taken of birds and mammals in zoos or aviaries, others were taken in the wild, often in remote places. Their names echo musically in my brain (and challenge my typing skills) as I look at photos fuzzy and sharp, and read tales of habitat encroachment, avian disease, and hunting. The photographs span the years 1870 to 2004.

To the Editor: Re “ Tiger on the Loose: Can It Happen Here? ” (news article, Dec. 27): It’s little wonder that Tatiana, the tiger that escaped from the San Francisco Zoo, longed for her freedom. Tigers are designed by nature to roam far and wide, hunt, claim territory and seek out mates.

Pink Pigeons were featured on episode four of the second season of The Zoo , the excellent television series about The Bronx Zoo,* and their story was disturbing. Meanwhile, on The Zoo, the keepers have been creating an environment for Thelma and Louise so they can nurture the hoped-for egg from The Stud and Serendipity.

For some reason, even though there are Mandarin Ducks in zoos throughout New York City, this escapee has become an internationally known tourist attraction, even heading the New York Times list of “Five Times the Internet Was Actually Fun in 2018.” It has always been a difficult bird to find, even when abundant.
