Birding Humauaca and Abra Pampa – Northern Argentina Trip Report

The wind was strong and the cold air kept us from exploring too far but we managed some great views of Puna Teal, Crested Duck, Giant Coot, and Lake Duck. Crested Duck. We reached another wire fence and we could not drive any further, we could now see flamingos and ducks at the lake. Giant Coot.

But the strangest bird was a duck, one that I have never seen before, that does not even inhabit Europe (apart from feral birds), and yet, somehow strangely familiar (probably not that much of a surprise after a lifetime of snooping through field guides). So I watched an unknown duck now, quite bright, clearly a male.

The landing gear came down and I ducked into my car and left the quartet in peace. Argentina is calling and the fall migration will soon be underway. Message received, at this point I was backing towards and into my open car door as she drove the point home. I imagine this is the last thing many gophers in Klamath see.

Screamers are most closely related to waterfowl such as ducks and geese. It is also perhaps the best place in Brazil to see White-fronted Woodpecker , a specialty more typical of the Chaco of Paraguay and Argentina which occurs in small numbers at Pousada Piuval. Crossing them was like taking a leap of faith each time.
