Most of the usual birds seem present, a frog or two call from a small wetland, and a few other expected animals are there too. During our time travels, we would note vast changes in many other birds and animals. Part of that recognition is assessing which types of plants and animals are more threatened than others.

Costa Rica is well known for national parks and other protected areas than offer access to tropical ecosystems dripping with biodiversity. These are the plants and animals that strive to persist in the realm of Homo sapiens. Lots of birds, a lot of really cool birds! The Emerald Tanager is one of those cool ones.

UNLESS that is you get yourself down to the internationally-renowned Tambopata Research Centre in southern Peru where literally hundreds of macaws (and other parrots) congregate around a 50 meter high clay bank. A range of animals come to satisfy their need for salt or the soothing effects of the clay along the river banks of the region.

The next time you see a Bay-breasted Warbler in May, know that it might be singing its heart out because it was able to use habitat at Selva Bananito and other protected areas in Costa Rica. Parrots galore : Down by this one river, there were flocks of Mealy, Red-lored, White-crowned, Blue-headed, and Brown-hooded Parrots.

Monk Parakeet is the only parrot species that builds its own nest. Some articles speculate that the nests offer protection against the cold. The answer lies in the nests. I say the nests work because these birds are not very fussy about where they build them. Monk Parakeets are known for building their nests on utility poles.
