Trusting my instinct that in this kind of weather I can easily show this animal, a few days later I came back with a TV crew and… bingo!

Driving slowly along the track towards the levee separating this area from the Danube backwaters, a largish marten-like animal once ran across the track. About the size of a hare, it is more clumsily jumping, than running… and that tail… It was the European Otter ! Photo by Branislav Dencic.

And here in Europe, they are the real deal, an indigenous species and not domesticated animals gone wild. Whenever I come here, I am focused on birds, but I have had some good mammal sighting as well: a roe deer swimming across a pond (only its head and antlers visible), a pair of otters playing in the water, a curious (young?)

Swans swim on a small pond on the distillery grounds and deer and otters can be found by a trail that runs beside the burn.

He also had tigers, cougars, and some other animals. This is approximated by the size of the animal, but really, this has to be adjusted for depending on modality of killing. Smaller and larger animals (if there are any) are taken by other creatures. That part of the carnivore landscape is taken by other animals.

The field site I am assigned to is located in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and home to a particularly rich avifauna that numbers well over 500 species.
