The good news is that if you know someone who needs to be schooled on all of the sordid details of factory farming, and appreciates good writing, this is a great book. Ever, in fact.

Ninety-nine percent of dairy farms are family owned. Families, so the commercials go, don't engage in untoward aspects of animal husbandry that might hurt the cows.

His passion and compassion for humans is immense, but he appears to have some kind of mental block with nonhuman animals. He romanticizes his childhood usage of animals as if that was the right way to do it , and he longs for those days. What that means is that it wasn't a factory-farm operation. Kristof frustrates me.

Notice that the author is not opposed to the use of nonhuman animals as resources for human consumption. Perhaps she would argue that there is no double standard, i.e., that there is a morally relevant difference between human animals and nonhuman animals that justifies the difference in treatment.
